The Ford 6.7 power stroke engine is actually quite popular – and for a good reason too! It has multiple raving reviews and is known to perform very well. However, there are always lingering doubts. For example, is the 6.7 power stroke reliable? Will it last for thousands of miles without any hassle? Should you go for it or choose another option?

A brief about the engine
The 6.7 power stroke is a turbocharged diesel engine. Its cylinder is made out of graphite iron (compacted), which is a unique feature because most engines use cast iron. It also has a steel crankshaft, cast iron pistons, and connecting rods made out of powdered metal. Below are a few important specifications:
- It is a four-stroke, turbocharged combustion engine.
- It is used in Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-650, and F-750.
- It was first produced in 2011 and its manufacturing is still going strong.
- The cylinder’s head is made out of aluminium while the body is made with graphite iron.
- Its fuel system is the common rail direct injection.
- It has 4 valves per cylinder.
- There are 8 cylinders.
- The displacement is 6,700 cc.
- The stroke is 108 mm.
- You will ideally need to change the oil only once a year or after 12,000 km.
Ford 6.7 power stroke problems
No machine is devoid of problems. The 6.7 power stroke is no exception. However, most problems are isolated and very few owners have reported them. Having said that, let’s gloss over these problems now:
- Defective radiators: Leaky radiators were a common problem with the early build (2011) as they leaked but the later models did not report this as much.
- Turbocharge failure: Initially, the engine had Honeywell DualBoost, which was quite disappointing. This is why turbocharge failure was common in the 2011 and 2012 models. Later, Ford introduced steel ball bearings and that brought this problem to an end.
- Engine failure: Glow plugs dropping and causing engine failure was a huge complaint, which earned the engine a bad name. The incidents were not very common but due to the gravity of the problem, word spread fast. However, because the cases are very few, the company did not initiate a recall.
- Sensor failure: Many 2011 models had faulty NOx sensors. This is why the power of the engine went down under specific circumstances. To tackle this program, Ford initiated a program to check and rectify the fault. The program ended in 2013.
Is the 6.7 power stroke reliable?
Now to the million-dollar question. Is the 6.7 power stroke reliable? We would say absolutely, yes!
You will see that most of the problems noted were in the initial models of the engine. The latest ones are actually very good with excellent efficiency. The only thing that you need to remember is servicing. Ford recommends service intervals that you must follow. If you do that, you will sail smoothly even beyond 300,000 miles!
